Review: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib – “Piñata”

Slamin…

Ever since I read that Freddie Gibbs & Madlib were going to collaborate on an album together, I knew something special was going to take place. Gibbs has been on an incredible run. “The Label’s Tryna Kill Me” mix tape set the tone for everything. I started doing my research and going back to his older and recent material. I was an instant fan. He flows flawlessly and commands every song he gets on. He’s probably one of the most well rounded emcees in a long time.

Madlib, without a doubt is a brilliant producer. “Madvillain” is a prime example of perfect blend of creativity, originality and raw Hip Hop. It just made sense that these two created something classic and they didn’t disappoint. “Piñata” has my vote for Album of the Year. “Shame”, “Scarface”, “Deeper”, “Bomb” and “Uno” are prime examples why the case of one producer and one emcee makes perfect sense. Coherent, cohesive and classical. Gangsta Gibbs and Madlib, just my two cents. Peace.
